On March 26, 2013 the Franklin County Sheriff's Office obtained an Indictment from the recent Franklin County Grand Jury on John Donald Smith for Murder.  The murder of Larry Graham occured on February 16, 1980 on Hwy 13 in Phil Campbell, AL at a trailer park.  Evidence shows that Melvin Rickard and John Smith went to a residence and confronted Larry Graham.  An altercation occured between the three and evidence indicates that John Smith cut Larry Graham's throat from behind.

The case was reopened on February 13, 2012 after new evidence surfaced and witnesses came forward.  The evidence was submitted to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences.  Indictment was immediately served on John Smith who was already in the Franklin County Detention Center on unrelated charges.
